Chapter 3 ~ Goodbye Memphis

Well, I've finally decided to run away. It's 1:30 in the morning and I'm in a small restaraunt in a truck stop. I just sat down to write for a bit. I'm not hungry so I won't waste my money on food. When I'm finished writing I am gonna go outside and see if I can get a ride from a truck driver. I was thinking while I was walking here. I'm heading for Tulsa. I know it's complety crazy but where else can I go. I'll probably never even get to see hanson, but I can at least try. I'll get a job and when I get enough money I guess I could get a cheap apartment. I wish it was July 5th again. The concert was so great. Amanda's mom took us to Atlanta, I secretly hate Amanda and her mom but I had to go to see hanson. Well, I guess I'll go outside now and hopefully find a nice truck driver to give me a ride.

Kirstie turned 16 May 8th, yet her parents wouldn't let her get her drivers license because they didn't trust her. She didn't really agrue with them about it anyway, she knew they wouldn't let her go anywhere if she had it. She lives in Memphis Tennessee and attends, well, use to attend Wood Ridge High School. When she started Junior High she quit talking to people and caring what other people thought of her. She is a junior in high school now. She became quite popular last year, because she loves Hanson so much and no one else does. She gets in trouble a lot, because of all the fights she gets in with hanson haters. She doesn't have to worry about that anymore. She's decided she's never going back to school, and never going back home.

"Excuse me Sir, where are you headed?" She asks a nicely dressed man climbing into a truck.

"I'm going to Baltimore, Maryland." He replies, turning around. "Why do you ask?"

Kirstie gets a disappointed look on her face and begins to walk away. "Oh never mind," she tries to say politely.

She looks around and runs to another nice looking man who is getting in his truck. "Sir where are you going?" She asks, tapping on his back.

"I'm on my way to Springdale." He says, giving her a questioning look.

"What state is that in?" She asks him.

The man keeps giving her that strange look and replies, "It's in Arkansas."

"Great!" She says, pulling a map she bought inside out of her back pocket. "Could you show me where?"

He looks at her map and points at a spot not to far from the line seperating Arkansas and Oklahoma. "Right there."

"Oh can you please take me with you?" She begs the man.

"Well, we're not suppose to...."

"Please! Please!" She cries. "I would really appreciate it."

"If it means that much to you..."

"Oh thank you thank you!" She yells, wanting to hug the stranger.

"Where are your parents?"

"That doesn't matter. I'm 18." Kirstie lied, afraid he wouldn't take her.

The strange look leaves the mans face. "Climb in and get in the back until we pull out of here." He says, looking around making sure no one is watching.

Kirstie turns around one last time to get a good look around her. "Goodbye Memphis." She whispers.

* * *

"Wake up." He calls to Kirstie. It's 9am and she had fallen asleep in the front sleep around 2:30 this morning. "What would you like for breakfast? Burger King? McDonalds?"

"Huh?" Kirstie wakes up startled, forgetting where she is.

"Are you hungry?" He asks her.

"Oh.... Yes, anywhere would be fine."

"Alright, there is a Burger King just a few miles down the road." He says yawning. "So, what's your story? What's in Springdale?"

She looks at the man wondering if she can trust him. "I don't know. I'm on my way to Tulsa. My name is Kirstie, what's yours?"

"I'm Jim. Why you headed to Tulsa?" He says, not taking his eyes from the road. "Don't worry. I won't tell anyone anything if you don't tell anybody you got a ride from me."

"Okay." Kirstie says. She finally gives in, deciding she can confide in him. "I'm 16 and I'm running away from home. I hate everything about my life. Especially my family. I want to try to start over, by myself. Have you heard of the band Hanson?

"They are those 3 young brothers, right?" He says, glancing over at her and looking back at the road.

"This is going to sound really silly, but... They live in Tulsa, and well, I've always wanted to meet them."

"That doesn't sound too silly," Jim says smiling. "I like their music. It's amazing how talented they are. I heard one of their songs on the radio yesterday."

"You really like them?"

"Yeah, they're pretty cool." He replies. "We should be in Springdale around 6. That's as far as I can take you though, I'm going to Louisianna after that."

Kirstie turns to look out the side window, smiling and thinking to herself. I can't believe it. He actually likes Hanson. When she started to tell him about it she had expected him to make fun of them like everyone else. The U.S. seems to look the same where ever you go. I bet I'll be just fine in Tulsa... I hope.
